Musical: Act 1, Scene 1

Disclaimer: I am neither a composer nor a lyricist. This is a very rough draft of what I envisioned for the musical to be held in "The First Musical." I tried to play with rhythm and poetic structures. As with many of the works shared here, it is incomplete. I believe I have most of the first act drafted, and rest jotted somewhere in notes. The plot as of this draft is very simple as I was more focused on the story than the musical, which was admittedly a mistake. But I like these wisps of characters (needing further development, of course) and some of the word play so I decided to post it as well.

Act I, Scene I
Lunille:   What is taking her so long?
Mary:     Who knows?  You would think after going dancing every week she’d learn how to be ready before we arrive.
Lunille:   I want to go now. All of the good partners will be taken if we wait much longer.
Mary:     True. I never much cared for the ugly ones. Remember Jeff, Lunille?
Lunille:   Good lord, Mary Grace. Do refrain from reminding me.
Mary:     Then convince her to hurry.

(sung)
Lunille:   Collette, hurry
                The dancing begins soon
Mary:     Collette, finished?
                We promise no buffoons
                Will woo you
                Or ask a dance
Lunille:   We’ll shoo them
                With our glaring glances
(Lunille & Mary laugh)

(spoken)
Collette:
                I’m coming!

(spoken)
Jonas:     Where is he?
Lucas:     You’re asking me? I arranged for the others to meet us for his bachelor party.
Jonas:     Lucas, I’m not his best man. It’s also your job to hurry him along.
Lucas:     Jonas, unless you want everyone to know about Johanna, you’d best assist me.

(sung)
Jonas:     Irial, come now
                The ladies shall not wait
Lucas:     Irial, we’ll leave you
                We bachelors go in haste
                To meet our
                Ladies of the night
Jonas:     Woo and chase
                Along with us
Jonas & Lucas:
Tonight it’s your last right

Irial:        For tomorrow I wed

(spoken)
Jonas & Lucas:
Thank god we’ll still be bachelors.

(sung)
Collette:
I’m weary of these dance-filled nights
All I want is someone of my own
                A kindred heart
                A loving glance
And arms to call my home

But they call to me to dance
                Join them in their revelry
                Spin in circles
                See no one
I’ll never find someone for me

Mary:     Collette, we’re leaving
                If you don’t come soon
Lunille:   Collette, come quickly
                We’re losing to the moon
                Because you choose
                To take your time
Mary:     We lose our partners
Lunille:   And our wine.
Mary & Lunille:
                So hurry down
                From your room
                No obligations
                 If you come soon
                No need to fret
                ‘Bout getting married
                We’ll all stay free

(Collette appears, ready for the night)
                Finally

Irial:        Tomorrow comes far too quickly
                I’m not prepared for this
                A woman who
                I’m forced to marry
                I don’t want a phony bliss

Should I join them at the dance
Lie to women I will meet
                I know I’m promised
                To another but
What happens if I find someone for me?

Lucas:     Irial, hurry
                The ladies will not wait
Jonas:     Irial, we’re leaving
                We need to satiate
                Our thirst
                For lovely treats
Lucas:     To find a beauty
Jonas:     Who’ll love our beast

Jonas & Lucas:
                Now we’re leaving
                Done with waiting
                Time to set our lines
                For baiting
                Women for your last night
Of freedom, as is your right
                For tomorrow that ends

(Irial appears, ready to leave)
                Alas, here’s our friend

(simultaneously)

Jonas, Lucas, Lunille & Mary:
                Now the party shall begin!
Collette & Irial:
                Will this nightmare never end?
