Act I, Scene II
(spoken)
(entering
tavern)
Lunille: Perfect. All of the decent guys have been
swooped up by these wenches.
Mary: Lunille! No decent man would want that
mouth.
Lunille: Plenty of men would want this mouth.
Mary: Not to marry.
Lunille: Who said anything about marriage?
Mary: Then you’re no better than those—
Collette:
Both of you behave. No wonder
the only men you two could attract were Jeffrey and Leonard.
Mary: Careful, Collette, you almost sound bitter.
Lunille: Ooh la la, look who arrived late.
Mary: They’re all so handsome.
Collette:
(staring at Irial; he sees her; she looks away)
There’s a comely group of men
over there, as well.
Lunille: Yes, drunk, ugly men. Let’s ask the new ones
to dance. They’re at least still sober.
Mary: And young. What’s the matter, Collette? So
used to the scum you don’t remember what handsome men are like.
Collette:
That’s not the case at all.
Lunille: Then ask the man eyeing you to dance.
Mary: You’ll have to be specific, Lunille,
darling. They’re all eyeing her.
Lunille: The one who just entered, you silly girl.
Collette:
Never. I will not degrade myself
as such.
(sung)
Lunille: You’re a coward
And a worry
Mary: Just a talker
In no hurry
Lunille
& Mary:
To prove all
Of what we say is just a lie
Mary: You’re a lover
Far too kind
Lunille: And a princess
In your mind
Lunille
& Mary:
In a time
When royal dreams can only die
Lunille: You can ask him
To a dance
Mary: No need to kiss
Or for romance
Lunille
& Mary:
Just a chance
For you to see what he is like
Collette:
But I really
Must decline
For other things
Are on my mind
I didn’t ask
For you to start me on this
fight
Lunille
& Mary:
But we really
Must insist
Your best interest
Is our wish
And you can’t
Accomplish this while sitting
out
Collette:
I would have
To disagree
I am fine
I’ll always be
With just thinking
Nothing’s better than a lout
(spoken)
Lunille
& Mary:
But there are better men than
louts. And there are some prime examples over there.
Jonas: See what happens when we’re late? All the
ladies have partners.
Lucas: This is not my fault.
Irial: (seeing Collette) Well—
Jonas: (slapping Irial on the back) Good eye, my
friend. Lucas, the most beautiful ladies.
Lucas: That is a good eye you have, Irial. We
forgive you for making us late.
Jonas: Looks like our Irial has already staked one
for himself.
Lucas: Oh, the prettiest of them, too.
Irial: I have not.
Jonas &
Lucas:
Of course not.
Irial: We should find some different partners.
They seem preoccupied.
(sung)
Jonas: Our friend
Is lying to us both
Lucas: It’s unhealthy
For his growth
Jonas &
Lucas:
Into manhood
For tomorrow he is wed
Lucas: He must relax
And have some fun
Jonas: He’ll ask her
For she’s the one
Jonas &
Lucas:
Who can bring
His social life back from the
dead
Jonas: She’s a pretty
Little bird
Lucas: With a song
No one’s yet heard?
Jonas &
Lucas:
That could be
Just for your ears this very
night
Irial: She’s an angel
Means no harm
With an
Undeni’ble charm
And the intentions
You suggest would not be right
Jonas &
Lucas:
But we really
Must insist
Your best interest
Is our wish
And your freedom
Means the most to us right now
Irial: I am willing
Not to dance
Tonight is not
Left all to chance
For I’ll make
My future wife happy somehow
(spoken)
Jonas &
Lucas:
Why not test run your performance?
Irial: Because it’s dishonest.
(sung)
Lunille
& Mary:
If you refuse to ask him
To dance with you
We’ll do the asking
Just to see you two
For a while together
Jonas &
Lucas:
Ask her now else we insist
We will ask her
No need to ask
Or, with Delilah, confer
It’s not forever
Collette
& Irial: (pushed along)
Don’t make me do this
It’s not what I want
I’ll stand everything
You throw my way
Silently take your taunts
Jonas, Lucas,
Lunille & Mary:
This is no time to bargain
Your fate is unfolding
You’ll meet your night’s
Partner center stage
His/her* shyness withholding
(meet at the center)
My friend here has an interest
In your friend and we
Would like to see
The two of them
If your friend is free
(spoken) Of course!
(Jonas,
Lucas, Lunille, & Mary pair off and leave)
Collette
& Irial:
I’m sorry for my friends. Oh.
Well, just so you know—You first.
Irial: I insist.
Collette:
I’m not like this usually.
Irial: Neither am I.
(sung)
Collette:
Why’d I let them talk
Me into doing this
Tonight of all nights
Irial: She’s nervous and
She doesn’t want this
Nothing here feels right
Collette:
He’s not so bad a person
As far as I can tell
Irial: It’s better she’s with me
Than them, it’s just as well
Collette
& Irial:
So while we’re here tonight
It might turn out just swell
If together we should dance
Perhaps it’ll save me from this
hell
(spoken)
Irial: May I have this dance?
Collette:
I see no reason to deny you. I’m
called Collette.
Irial: I am Irial, and the pleasure is mine.
(sung)
Collette:
He’s different
From everyone I’ve known
In the kindnesses
He’s already shown
Irial: She’s truly an angel
A beauty, sweet and pure
She’s changed something inside
me
With her charm and her allure
Collette
& Irial:
I never thought I’d think this
I never it’d be
Yet I think I’ve fallen in love
With someone who’s just for me
Lunille
& Mary:
She glows like ne’er before
Her disinterest was a ruse
Jonas &
Lucas:
Delilah would die to see him
She hasn’t any clue
This girl, he likes her more
And they’ve barely even met
Lunille
& Mary:
I cannot tell if she would love
him
But she’s smitten, I would bet
It was a good decision
To bring her out tonight
Jonas,
Lucas, Lunille & Mary:
Regardless how they argued
Our insistence was just right
