Musical: Act 1, Scene 3

Act I, Scene III
(spoken)
Collette:
                I’m leaving.
Lunille & Mary:
You can’t by yourself. Wait for us a while more.
Collette:
Irial wants to leave as well and has offered to walk me home.
Lunille & Mary: (exchanging glances)
Very well then. Don’t do anything we wouldn’t do.
Collette:
Oh, you already know I would do far less than the two of you.
(Lunille & Mary laugh).

Irial:        I’m off, fellows.
Jonas:     It didn’t work out?
Lucas:     We’d thought for sure you were enjoying her company.
Irial:        I’m walking Collette home. We’re both tired of this place.
Jonas & Lucas:
Collette? (exchanging glances) Then we must enchant her friends in her absence.
Irial:        Just don’t make fools of yourselves.
Jonas & Lucas:
Remember not to mention you’re to be wed tomorrow and you may just get lucky.

(walking down the dark street, space between them)
Collette:
I had fun dancing, tonight. For the first time in a long time.
Irial:        I haven’t been dancing in a long time, to be honest.  I’m glad I met you…it was a wonderful surprise.
Collette:
                Why haven’t you been dancing?
Irial:        Delilah doesn’t enjoy it. (realizes what he has said) That’s not what I meant.
Collette:
                Who’s Delilah? And be honest.
Irial:        Tomorrow she’ll be my wife. But I had no choice in this. I don’t want to marry her.
Collette:
So what am I? The practice woman? You can’t deflower your Delilah before the ceremony, so you have to have someone else to practice on?
Irial:        It’s not that way. Truly. I have never loved her, and the thought of marrying her is revolting. I wish it wasn’t so. I wish I could have met you sooner.
Collette:
And I wish I’d never met you. Then there wouldn’t be a problem.
Irial:        Please, I didn’t mean for this to happen. I didn’t think I’d ever find someone like you. That I could ever want to kiss or be with a woman as much as I want to be with you. And I can tell you want the same thing.
Collette:
I don’t want to hear it.
Irial:        I cannot help my circumstance or what I now desire. And more than any of that, I long to kiss you.
Collette: (stops his attempt)
Don’t. You may think on it, but it won’t do any good.
Irial:        Whatever do you mean?
Collette:
                You know what I mean…
Irial:        Well, then explain what I know. Why shouldn’t I kiss you?

(sung)
Collette:
Because you know I love you
Though you have chosen someone else
And it tortures me to think that
You would abandon her for myself

Don’t you see what harm you cause
What chaos you send me into
Against my heart I plead this now
That no matter what you do

                Don’t kiss me
I shatter just at voting so
                Leave me now
Before her mind’s tied up in bows
                You know not what
                You try to do
                It hurts me so
                To say this to you
                But don’t kiss me
                (begins to walk away)

(spoken)
Irial:        Don’t go. Please.
Collette:
But I must. Before you go and break her heart.
Irial:        What makes you think I’d do that?
Collette:
Because you’re breaking mine. Now go back to Delilah. That’s where you belong.

(sung)
Irial:        My mind, my faith belongs to her
Because of vows yet to be said
My heart has made its mind be known
And not to her it shall be wed

Please just stay a moment more
                Let me spin you round
Hold my hand through turns and such
‘Til naught of us is found

                Dance with me
                Until the moon is gone
                Trust in me
I’ll leave when the sun has won
                Spin around
                The floor once more
                Show me the you
                That I adore
                And dance with me
(she breaks off from dancing and continues walking down the street)

(spoken)
Collette:
Our dancing time is over, and it’s ridiculous to dance in the street, besides. Now I told you to go home and make her happy.
Irial:        But I want to make you happy.
Collette:
Well, you just can’t decide after the rock is on her finger and people are already prepared for her wedding bells to ring.
Irial:        It wasn’t my choice, as I’ve said.
Collette: (turns on him)
So it’s my fault for living like every other fool?
Irial:        Not at all. It’s your fault for waiting so long to pass me.
Collette:
Maybe you should have chosen some sooner night to go dancing.
Irial:        Perhaps I should have.
Collette:
                You are so aggravating.
                (sung)
                Go home now
                I don’t want you here
                Stay far away
Keep your soul in the clear
Irial:        I choose you
                Just give me a chance
Collette:
                Fat luck
Irial:        Ma’am
                It took only a glance
Collette:
                You’re a liar too
                On top of a cheat
Irial:        Your words, my lord
                Pack far too much heat
Collette: (face to face with him)
Step away
There is someplace for you to go
                Stay with her
You’ll see me not, I promise so
Irial:        My heart desires
                To keep with you
Collette:
                And that is why
                I’ll say adieu
Irial:        And warn against
                Her saddened heart
Collette:
                I’ll not forgive
                Myself my part
                So don’t…kiss…me
(he kisses her)
